Creating Hoegaarden brewery has a very interesting history. In the Middle Ages some village famous for its Hoegaarden wheat beer. It is known that in the XIX century in this town has 13 breweries and distilleries 9. But by the middle of the XX century (in 1957) they were all closed.
Local milkman Pierre Celis, who lived next to one of the breweries and sometimes works there, decided to revive the local brewing tradition and in 1967 with the help of his father and the local veterans Brewers opens at the hayloft small production called "Sluis". Pierre used for brewing of traditional ingredients, such as water, yeast, wheat, hops, coriander and dried orange peel Curacao.
Demand for the products of the brewery began to grow, we needed a great power, so in the early 1980s, Pierre bought the former factory for the manufacture of lemonade "Hougardia". After the fire at the plant in 1985, a few breweries offered their assistance (such tradition exists in Belgium). One of them was the largest Belgian brewer Interbrew (which later, after the merger with AmBev, will be renamed to InBev). Interbrew has allocated money to buy other buildings to restore the plant.
Later, Celis sold Hoegaarden plant company Interbrew. In November 2005, InBev announced the planned closure of the plant in Hoegaarden and transfer production to a large brewery Jupille, owned by InBev. Closing sparked protests from local residents concerned about the loss of the most famous symbols of the city and the largest employer. In turn, the Brewers were unhappy Jupille locally produced beer, so Inbev decided to keep production in Hoegaarden, decided to invest 60 million euros in the modernization of Hoegaarden.
